Product Roundup

Glutino Products

Major ate a “nutri grain” style bar for lunch with his prime rib, fruit and veggies.  I swear my child eats better than me 99% of the time!  WE LOVE these Glutino brand bars.  They make gluten/dairy/ and I’m pretty sure soy free bars and toaster pastries.  We like the toaster pastries but not as much as these:

They come in a variety of flavors: Strawberry, Apple, Blueberry, and Cherry!  I find them at our local whole foods but you can also find where to buy them locally on there web site here: http://www.glutino.com/locate-a-retailer/
Here is a link to the toaster pastries that Major likes: http://www.glutino.com/products/toaster-pastries/
Butter Substitute
For “fake butter” we like to use the Earth Balance soy free spread.  I buy it at our local whole foods, but it can be found at Wal-Mart and other major retailers.  Their web site is: http://www.earthbalancenatural.com
We personally prefer the soy free, which comes in a red container.  I also love to bake  and cook with the Earth Balance!  It does great with heat!

While we love the Earth Balance, my mom prefers the Smart Balance Light http://smartbalance.com/products/buttery-spread/smart-balance-light-original-buttery-spread
Which cannot be found at whole foods but at most major grocery chains!
Milk Substitute
As of recently we have chosen not to consume a ton of soy products because soy acts like an estrogen and I would prefer not to mess with our child’s hormones this young if we can help it, even if it turns out to be false!  SO we use coconut milk.  Major and I both LOVE the SO Delicious Coconut milk.  We drink the unsweetened plain flavored one.  So delicious also makes a pretty good cultured coconut milk yogurt that I find at whole foods (both milk and yogurt).  The chcocolate flavored and vanilla coconut milks are great for a treat but contain a good bit of sugar so I don’t like to drink them every day nor do I give them to Major often!  So Delicious Coconut milk is the most neutral tasting milk substitute that I’ve found, it does great in baking as well!
Their coconut coffee creamers are also delicious!  The plain coconut milk doesn’t do very well in coffee, I think because it isn’t super thick, but I’m not sure why!
Important web sites for So Delicious:

Bread
We really like the Rudi’s brand breads. Major loves the original and the cinnamon raisin.  I find these breads in the freezer section of Whole Foods.  There are other dairy free breads that can be found at your normal grocer, I just have not spent the time to find them yet.  I will post more on this later once I do my homework!  In the mean time we LOVE Rudi’s bread!  Both Cinnamon raisin and Original varieties are also gluten free, soy free, and DAIRY FREE!  (not to be confused with Udi’s.  It’s ok but not fabulous They do make an excellent hot dog bun though, find their web site here: http://udisglutenfree.com/products/classic-hot-dog-buns/)
Rudi’s web site: http://www.rudisbakery.com
Where to find Rudi’s products: http://www.rudisbakery.com/organic/where-to-buy/

Update:  We LOVE the Rudi’s breads with gluten too!  They are found near the bread at whole foods, and they are soy and dairy free!

My facebook friend Gina also eats the Sara Lee Delightful Wheat bread and according to the ingredients on this web site (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sara-Lee-Wheat-Bread-20-oz/10533906) it is dairy free!  I can’t wait to go to the store to get it!  It can be found at most major grocers. WARNING: The delightful hamburger buns do have milk according to the web site!

Pudding
Most Jello puddings are dairy free!  The instant pudding mixes DO NOT work with milk alternatives, but the good news is that the cook and serve mixes do!  WARNING:  The premade Pudding cups that you can buy in your grocer’s refrigerator section are NOT safe!  Find more information on Jello’s Web site here: http://www.jello.com/products/pudding-mousse-desserts/
Cresecent Rolls
Pillsbury Crescent Rolls are Dairy Free!!!  Available at your local grocer!
Crackers
Saltine crackers and Ritz Crackers are dairy free, Update:  The whole wheat ritz crackers contain soybean oil, but Major can tolerate soybean oil and soy lecithin so these are a safe food for us!  As always, make sure that these ingredients are safe for you with your dr. before consuming!

Nabisco premium saltine crackers are dairy free and can be found at most major grocers.  If you prefer to shop at whole foods since a lot of the groceries I feature on this list are found there, the back to nature saltine crackers are dairy free as well!
Where to buy back to nature products: http://www.backtonaturefoods.com/Where-to-buy.aspx
We use the daiya shredded cheeses.  I don’t LOVE them and am currently searching for recipes where I can make my own (for another post).  Until I find something that tastes better, this is the best I have tasted!  WARNING!: I have heard that the almond cheese is supposed to taste “like the real thing” but it has milk protein in it!!!!  I buy the daiya at whole foods, but it is available elsewhere.  I also prefer the shredded cheese to the block cheese.  I think it is easier to work with and it also has a better taste and is a little bit drier (more like the real thing) than the block, or tub of cheese.

Chocolate Chips/Chocolate
Most of the chocolate that we consume in the US has dairy in it.  Some dark chocolates don’t have dairy (read the label) but the chocolate chips that I really like are Enjoy Life brand and Ghirardelli brand.

Ghirardelli: Be careful with these chips, this is what the wal-mart web site says about them: “Manufacture On The Same Equipment That Also Make S Products Containing Milk. Made In A Facility That Uses Peanuts And Tree Nuts.”  They also contain soy.  Ghirardelli’s web site is: http://www.ghirardelli.com/store/shop-products/collections/baking-products/semi-sweet-chocolate-baking-chips.html
Chicken Nuggets
Having a small child, I think that chicken nuggets are a must.  Applegate has our favorite chicken nugget products.  We LOVE the organic chicken nuggets that are found  in the freezer section at Whole Foods.  Applegate also has a nonorganic version of this that is also dairy free (they are nuggets not strips though).

Hot Dogs
Our favorite hot dogs are the Applegate brand natural big apple hot dog.  They look funny in the package, but they are delicious!  I buy these at whole foods, but they have a handy dandy product locator on their web site (see where to buy on the chicken strips) where you can locate a specific product.  Also, I’d like to say that many of the applegate products are dairy free, but you have to check the packaging to be sure, because not all of them are!
In addition to the applegate brand hot dogs, Hebrew National hot dogs are also dairy free (because they’re kosher) and can be found at most major grocery stores.

Update:  Since Major now has a beef allergy, these hot dogs are no longer a safe food for him.  The hot dog we use now is the turkey hot dog by applegate farms.  He loves them!

Lunch Meat
If you haven’t noticed by now that I shop mainly at whole foods.  It is SO much easier than sifting through everything in the grocery store, but it can definitely be accomplished with practice at the regular grocery store too!  I LOVE the roasts that whole foods will slice for you that they cook in store.  They usually have a turkey breast and some sort of delicious beef.  While they are delicious and I think Major would eat them for every meal if I let him, they are very expensive.  So I try to save those for special occasions or when I’m in a super pinch!  Other safe lunch meats are diestel brand (double check the label but can be found at Whole Foods), Boar’s head brand (Here is a handy dandy list of all of their dairy free products: http://boarshead.com/products/milk-free), some sara lee meats (read the labels) and some Jennie O meats!  Boar’s head does not have a where to buy section but you could probably contact them through their web site to find out where to buy it in your area!  In the BR area, Maxwell’s market sells it!)

Update:  We LOVE the applegate farms lunch meat, it is dairy and casein free, as well as soy and gluten free!  Major LOVES their honey ham and I eat it almost daily on a sandwich with mayonnaise (since we don’t have egg allergies in our house) on Rudi’s bread!

Cake Mixes and Icings
Many of Duncan Hines cake mixes are dairy free.  I have not explored all of them but a few of our favorites are:
The Icings we have tried are:

Update:  Major is now allergic to food dyes, so beware when purchasing these cake mixes and icings because they may contain food dyes that are not safe for all people with food allergies!
IMPORTANT NOTE:  PRIOR TO EATING ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS OR FEEDING ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS TO ANYONE WITH AN ALLERGY, BE SURE TO READ ALL LABELS FOR YOURSELF, I WILL NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY MISTAKES OR ERRORS MADE IN READING LABELS!  THESE ARE THE PRODUCTS WE EAT, AND NOTHING MORE!
