Enjoy Life Soft Bars Review

I was sent an awesome package of Enjoy Life’s new Decadent Soft Baked Bars.  They are free of the top 8 allergens and are delicious!  I love Enjoy Life’s chocolate chips and chunks for baking so I was really excited when Enjoy Life approached me about doing a review of their latest products.  They come in wonderful flavors like cherry cobbler, chocolate sunbutter, cinnamon bun, and s’mores.  The first bar that I tried was the cinnamon bun, it is delicious, it isn’t overly cinnamonny in a good way.  You taste all of the flavor profiles in a cinnamon bun without all of the guilt, it even has this yummy drizzle of icing over the top.  Next was the S’mores, I typically don’t like s’more flavored things, but this was my favorite of the 4 bars.  It is perfectly chocolatey without being overpowering and it’s a little crispy and chewy at the same time.  I definitely plan to stash some of these in my purse for snacking since it’s so hard to find appropriate food on the go when you have dietary restrictions.  The Cherry Cobbler flavor is really yummy too, again, I really didn’t think I was going to like the cherry cobbler flavor because I don’t like actual cherry cobbler very much, but oh my it’s yummy!  It’s a little fruity and oatmealy tasting in a good way.  Finally, the chocolate sunbutter, this was the flavor I thought I was going to fall head over heels for, but I didn’t like it.  I really wanted to like it but I didn’t, neither did Jeff.  We agreed 100% that all of the other bars were delicious though and we want to buy them regularly for snacking for us and for Major!   I love that I don’t have to worry about cross contamination or hidden allergens in Enjoy Life’s products and I can’t wait for you guys to try these!

Safekeepers review

I approached Safekeepers about doing a review of their food storage containers because they are labeled “go” and “stop” so that people with food allergies can easily know if the food in the container is safe for them to eat.  I love this product because they are cute and useful.  Having a toddler with severe food allergies creates a lot of worries in my mind.  Knowing that he has his own special food storage containers to take to other people’s houses (his grandparents house, vacation homes, friends houses) where he will know that the food is safe for him to eat is SO important to me.  I love that I can buy a set of these containers to keep at my parents’ bay house, so that we can keep his “Major safe foods” in the go containers.  Also, I think these containers will be a valuable teaching tool in teaching him about looking for labels on packages and containers before eating a food.

I have been using these containers daily for about 3 weeks, and I have to say they are awesome!  I love that they are durable, easy to throw in the dishwasher, and easy to spot in the fridge.  So far, we haven’t used many of the “stop” containers as we have a dairy free and 99% soy free household, but they are the same design as the go containers, and the go containers have gotten a workout!  I have washed the containers on both the top and bottom rack of my dishwasher on its hottest setting and they did not melt.  Also they have been in the microwave and done great, the heavy-duty plastic really stands up.  I even let Major step on one play with one for a few days, and I couldn’t even tell.   The only con I have found for the containers is that they can stain if you put something like tomato sauce in them.  This is a problem with most food storage containers on the market so I don’t think it is a reason not to buy these wonderful containers!

Allergy Proof Recipes for Kids Review

Recently I trialed a few recipes from Allergy Proof Recipes for Kids by Leslie Hammond and Lynne Marie Rominger.  I had really high hopes for this book, but unfortunately the recipes I tried were less than stellar.  The ideas for the recipes sounded great, and I really wanted them to taste excellent, but at the core they were flavorless and had a strange aftertaste.  The main dish recipe that I tried (and consequently decided the test of the cookbook was over because it was so bland) was the pastitsio.  The pasta with meat sauce was easy (you just add some onion and garlic to jarred tomato sauce) and then there is this white goo you make that is meant to be a white sauce, but it is literally gooey and disgusting.  You paste it over the top of the pasta, and it hardens so the pasta clumps together.  All of the red sauce is absorbed in the pasta, and so it’s pink pasta with a hard white shell on top.  As a result this cookbook is not for us.  I wish it was, because I love an allergy friendly cookbook, but I plan to look elsewhere for future recipes for my family!  If you still want to try it out, you can buy it  on amazon on amazon here.

oat milk and caramel corn

Since visiting with the nutritionist at Mt. Sinai hospital’s Jaffe Food Allergy Institute Major has been on oat milk.  The nutritionist recommended this because it has 4g of protein as opposed to coconut milk’s (maybe) 1g.  Protein is a must for a growing boy! This is the brand we use.  It is available at whole foods, but I buy it in cases of 12 here, since we use so much of it!  It is great to cook and bake with as well.  It is naturally sweet so Major loves it even more than the coconut milk.

Another great product score is finding cocomojoe caramel corn.  This stuff is a.m.a.z.i.n.g.  If you’re not too far into the allergen free eating, you will soon find out that popcorn almost always has dairy in it (even those awesome bagged microwaveable corns at the health food stores are made on machinery that has dairy on it usually).  I am not a HUGE popcorn person but I really love a good caramel corn every now and then.  Enter, this stuff, life changing caramel corn that tastes just like the real thing but is dairy and soy free!  Those of you that know me know that I have a raging sweet tooth, and the cocomo corn has been my poison lately.  Now for the downside, it isn’t available locally so you have to get it shipped to you from their web site.  It is worth every penny!

As always, please read the ingredients list for yourself before eating because I am human and I might be wrong at times!  I will not be liable for any mistakes in ingredients

Go Dairy Free

http://www.godairyfree.org is an amazing resource for anybody who is dairy free.  They have a huge product recommendation section that I usually agree with, although they tend to like things a little too much at times.  For example, they say that nondairy cheese tastes “just like the real thing” and I am very sorry, but it does not!  They have some really GREAT recipes though!  I have made some of our favorite recipes from this web site, especially the brownies that I posted here.  They also have a very handy cookbook that has an amazing section that explains dairy allergies, diagnosis of dairy allergies, and a lot of the information you need to know if you or someone you love has a problem with dairy.  The book also contains recipes for product swap outs, like a recipe for nondairy sweetened condensed milk that you just can’t find in the stores.  I love the swap out recipes because they allow me to make almost any recipe I want that originally had dairy in it!  I like the book so much that I just ordered 3 of them to give to my family members that help take care of Major regularly!

Pizza Tricks and Tips

Okay, So my friend Leah and a random checkout lady helped save me when it comes to pizza.  Sometimes you just want a piece of pizza with pepperoni on it. Or at least I do!  So far I know of two choices:
         1. Papa John’s crust is vegan and so is their sauce, so you order a pizza with no cheese on it and whatever toppings you want/can eat.  I get it delivered, and immediately after it comes, I melt a little bit of the Daiya (mozzarella style shreds) cheese on it (See products section) under the broiler.  Warning, I don’t like to use too much of the Daiya because it’s really rich and it has a bit of an after taste, but it does the job of satisfying the pizza craving.   Warning:  Papa John’s thin crust pizza HAS DAIRY IN IT!  The original crust does not, according to their allergen guide here.
 2. Mellow Mushroom offers vegan cheese at most if not all of their locations.   Now that Mellow Mushroom is in most college towns and even some non-college towns now, and if you’re lucky like we are they will deliver it to your house!  You can order any pizza on the menu that you want and they will use vegan cheese if you request it.  Be aware that if it says the pizza comes with goat cheese or parmesan you need to get them to leave it off!  When we were first doing no dairy I ordered a meatball sub there with vegan cheese as well, but I didn’t check to make sure that the meatballs weren’t made with cheese (rookie mistake) but if you or your child isn’t super sensitive like we are, you could totally order the meatball sub and just get them to put the daiya cheese on it, it’s delicious!

3. Also, According to Papa Murphy’s web site, their crusts are dairy free, but are manufactured on shared equipment with dairy items, so cross contamination may be an issue!  If you are interested in other allergen information from Papa Murphy’s check out their allergen guide here. Thanks to Jessica for the info!
If anybody has any other pizza tips, I’d LOVE to know them and put them on here for everybody else to read!

Product Roundup

Glutino Products

Major ate a “nutri grain” style bar for lunch with his prime rib, fruit and veggies.  I swear my child eats better than me 99% of the time!  WE LOVE these Glutino brand bars.  They make gluten/dairy/ and I’m pretty sure soy free bars and toaster pastries.  We like the toaster pastries but not as much as these:

They come in a variety of flavors: Strawberry, Apple, Blueberry, and Cherry!  I find them at our local whole foods but you can also find where to buy them locally on there web site here: http://www.glutino.com/locate-a-retailer/
Here is a link to the toaster pastries that Major likes: http://www.glutino.com/products/toaster-pastries/
Butter Substitute
For “fake butter” we like to use the Earth Balance soy free spread.  I buy it at our local whole foods, but it can be found at Wal-Mart and other major retailers.  Their web site is: http://www.earthbalancenatural.com
We personally prefer the soy free, which comes in a red container.  I also love to bake  and cook with the Earth Balance!  It does great with heat!

While we love the Earth Balance, my mom prefers the Smart Balance Light http://smartbalance.com/products/buttery-spread/smart-balance-light-original-buttery-spread
Which cannot be found at whole foods but at most major grocery chains!
Milk Substitute
As of recently we have chosen not to consume a ton of soy products because soy acts like an estrogen and I would prefer not to mess with our child’s hormones this young if we can help it, even if it turns out to be false!  SO we use coconut milk.  Major and I both LOVE the SO Delicious Coconut milk.  We drink the unsweetened plain flavored one.  So delicious also makes a pretty good cultured coconut milk yogurt that I find at whole foods (both milk and yogurt).  The chcocolate flavored and vanilla coconut milks are great for a treat but contain a good bit of sugar so I don’t like to drink them every day nor do I give them to Major often!  So Delicious Coconut milk is the most neutral tasting milk substitute that I’ve found, it does great in baking as well!
Their coconut coffee creamers are also delicious!  The plain coconut milk doesn’t do very well in coffee, I think because it isn’t super thick, but I’m not sure why!
Important web sites for So Delicious:

Bread
We really like the Rudi’s brand breads. Major loves the original and the cinnamon raisin.  I find these breads in the freezer section of Whole Foods.  There are other dairy free breads that can be found at your normal grocer, I just have not spent the time to find them yet.  I will post more on this later once I do my homework!  In the mean time we LOVE Rudi’s bread!  Both Cinnamon raisin and Original varieties are also gluten free, soy free, and DAIRY FREE!  (not to be confused with Udi’s.  It’s ok but not fabulous They do make an excellent hot dog bun though, find their web site here: http://udisglutenfree.com/products/classic-hot-dog-buns/)
Rudi’s web site: http://www.rudisbakery.com
Where to find Rudi’s products: http://www.rudisbakery.com/organic/where-to-buy/

Update:  We LOVE the Rudi’s breads with gluten too!  They are found near the bread at whole foods, and they are soy and dairy free!

My facebook friend Gina also eats the Sara Lee Delightful Wheat bread and according to the ingredients on this web site (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sara-Lee-Wheat-Bread-20-oz/10533906) it is dairy free!  I can’t wait to go to the store to get it!  It can be found at most major grocers. WARNING: The delightful hamburger buns do have milk according to the web site!

Pudding
Most Jello puddings are dairy free!  The instant pudding mixes DO NOT work with milk alternatives, but the good news is that the cook and serve mixes do!  WARNING:  The premade Pudding cups that you can buy in your grocer’s refrigerator section are NOT safe!  Find more information on Jello’s Web site here: http://www.jello.com/products/pudding-mousse-desserts/
Cresecent Rolls
Pillsbury Crescent Rolls are Dairy Free!!!  Available at your local grocer!
Crackers
Saltine crackers and Ritz Crackers are dairy free, Update:  The whole wheat ritz crackers contain soybean oil, but Major can tolerate soybean oil and soy lecithin so these are a safe food for us!  As always, make sure that these ingredients are safe for you with your dr. before consuming!

Nabisco premium saltine crackers are dairy free and can be found at most major grocers.  If you prefer to shop at whole foods since a lot of the groceries I feature on this list are found there, the back to nature saltine crackers are dairy free as well!
Where to buy back to nature products: http://www.backtonaturefoods.com/Where-to-buy.aspx
We use the daiya shredded cheeses.  I don’t LOVE them and am currently searching for recipes where I can make my own (for another post).  Until I find something that tastes better, this is the best I have tasted!  WARNING!: I have heard that the almond cheese is supposed to taste “like the real thing” but it has milk protein in it!!!!  I buy the daiya at whole foods, but it is available elsewhere.  I also prefer the shredded cheese to the block cheese.  I think it is easier to work with and it also has a better taste and is a little bit drier (more like the real thing) than the block, or tub of cheese.

Chocolate Chips/Chocolate
Most of the chocolate that we consume in the US has dairy in it.  Some dark chocolates don’t have dairy (read the label) but the chocolate chips that I really like are Enjoy Life brand and Ghirardelli brand.

Ghirardelli: Be careful with these chips, this is what the wal-mart web site says about them: “Manufacture On The Same Equipment That Also Make S Products Containing Milk. Made In A Facility That Uses Peanuts And Tree Nuts.”  They also contain soy.  Ghirardelli’s web site is: http://www.ghirardelli.com/store/shop-products/collections/baking-products/semi-sweet-chocolate-baking-chips.html
Chicken Nuggets
Having a small child, I think that chicken nuggets are a must.  Applegate has our favorite chicken nugget products.  We LOVE the organic chicken nuggets that are found  in the freezer section at Whole Foods.  Applegate also has a nonorganic version of this that is also dairy free (they are nuggets not strips though).

Hot Dogs
Our favorite hot dogs are the Applegate brand natural big apple hot dog.  They look funny in the package, but they are delicious!  I buy these at whole foods, but they have a handy dandy product locator on their web site (see where to buy on the chicken strips) where you can locate a specific product.  Also, I’d like to say that many of the applegate products are dairy free, but you have to check the packaging to be sure, because not all of them are!
In addition to the applegate brand hot dogs, Hebrew National hot dogs are also dairy free (because they’re kosher) and can be found at most major grocery stores.

Update:  Since Major now has a beef allergy, these hot dogs are no longer a safe food for him.  The hot dog we use now is the turkey hot dog by applegate farms.  He loves them!

Lunch Meat
If you haven’t noticed by now that I shop mainly at whole foods.  It is SO much easier than sifting through everything in the grocery store, but it can definitely be accomplished with practice at the regular grocery store too!  I LOVE the roasts that whole foods will slice for you that they cook in store.  They usually have a turkey breast and some sort of delicious beef.  While they are delicious and I think Major would eat them for every meal if I let him, they are very expensive.  So I try to save those for special occasions or when I’m in a super pinch!  Other safe lunch meats are diestel brand (double check the label but can be found at Whole Foods), Boar’s head brand (Here is a handy dandy list of all of their dairy free products: http://boarshead.com/products/milk-free), some sara lee meats (read the labels) and some Jennie O meats!  Boar’s head does not have a where to buy section but you could probably contact them through their web site to find out where to buy it in your area!  In the BR area, Maxwell’s market sells it!)

Update:  We LOVE the applegate farms lunch meat, it is dairy and casein free, as well as soy and gluten free!  Major LOVES their honey ham and I eat it almost daily on a sandwich with mayonnaise (since we don’t have egg allergies in our house) on Rudi’s bread!

Cake Mixes and Icings
Many of Duncan Hines cake mixes are dairy free.  I have not explored all of them but a few of our favorites are:
The Icings we have tried are:

Update:  Major is now allergic to food dyes, so beware when purchasing these cake mixes and icings because they may contain food dyes that are not safe for all people with food allergies!
IMPORTANT NOTE:  PRIOR TO EATING ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS OR FEEDING ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS TO ANYONE WITH AN ALLERGY, BE SURE TO READ ALL LABELS FOR YOURSELF, I WILL NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY MISTAKES OR ERRORS MADE IN READING LABELS!  THESE ARE THE PRODUCTS WE EAT, AND NOTHING MORE!
